Re: Gravel or Sand? Which one to use?? « Result #1 on Dec 14, 2009, 12:13pm »
AND dont' forget about the pool filter sand they have now. IN browns, light and dark and now a WHITISH one!! That is going in my 125gal and the 35gal hex. yea. can't wait..
U can find most smoother pool filter sands now, CALL a pool supply store and ask about the smoother, not sharp, Filter sand they now have. GREAT for tanks at 50# for under 10.00..

you can always head to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy a 50lb bag of Black Sand Blasting Abrasive. This makes incredible sand, and its about $10 for 50#. It can be siphoned as its heavy and won't get sucked up real bad, and looks great.

Gravel or Sand? Which one to use?? « Result #3 on Nov 24, 2009, 12:28pm »
When U do a tank, picking the gravel or sand grain/color texture can be confusing... I have both BUT I like the Sand best. finding the color and grain size is a problem.
See here on a good choice of both.. NOW finding the store to get it for U!! Cheaply!! I have found it to be cheaper on line.. WAY cheaper, even with frieght charges.

Gallons in a rectangular or square aquarium:
Length x Width x Height (all in inches), divide total by 231.
Sand or gravel needed for aquarium:
Length x Width x Bed depth desired (all in inches), divide total by 1,728, then multiply by 100 for sand or 70 for gravel. This will give you an estimate of the pounds needed for a bed of sand or gravel.
The osmotic properties of seawater result from the total amount of dissolved salts. This is expressed in salinity. For example, a salinity of 35ppt would be equal to 35 grams of NaCl/1,000 milliliters of a solution, or 3.5% solution NaCl. The following are average salinities of different types of water. Fresh water:…………………………0-0.5 Low salinity brackish water:………..0.5-3.0 Medium salinity brackish water:....... 3.0-10.0 High salinity brackish water:……….10.0- 17.0 Low salinity seawater:……………...17.0- 30.0 Medium salinity seawater:………… 30.0- 34.0 High salinity seawater:……………..34.0- 38.0 Brine:……………………………….38.0+

Now we took notice to more fry swimming in the tank.
The one person who works at the local pet store came by to see them to help identify the black fry.
In addition to the Platy fry, I've got Peppered Cory Catfish fry. Wow, that was a surprise for us.
We are heading for Texas instead. Got some friends there that will help us get settled down.
We lost the Mickey Platy the other day, the mother to the platy fry. We lost all the fish but the fry, I don't know what is up with the tank but all the fry are thriving.
