When U do a tank, picking the gravel or sand grain/color texture can be confusing... I have both BUT I like the Sand best. finding the color and grain size is a problem. See here on a good choice of both.. NOW finding the store to get it for U!! Cheaply!! I have found it to be cheaper on line.. WAY cheaper, even with frieght charges. See the left side menu for more options.. linkSeems to be cheaper here. Careful thou on what U chose. not sure on the cost of shipping.. linklinkFor a NEW tank: see here on a substrate that cycles for U..linkALSO this I did a few years ago and I forgot about it!! yea it happens. you can always head to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy a 50lb bag of Black Sand Blasting Abrasive. This makes incredible sand, and its about $10 for 50#. It can be siphoned as its heavy and won't get sucked up real bad, and looks great.

AND dont' forget about the pool filter sand they have now. IN browns, light and dark and now a WHITISH one!! That is going in my 125gal and the 35gal hex. yea. can't wait..
U can find most smoother pool filter sands now, CALL a pool supply store and ask about the smoother, not sharp, Filter sand they now have. GREAT for tanks at 50# for under 10.00..

8- i really want sand, especially for the tank i decided on for my tangs. i had all the (too large) gravel in this large tank already and thought it too impossible to get enough sand to fill. I think I am going to regret it tho,(well I already do) i want my leleupi's to keep their color, i want them to be able to feed properly off the bottom and id be thrilled if they'd have babies and the babies be able to thrive--and i feel sand is the only way they/i will feel comfortable. I am concerned about the pool sand. would i have to sterilize it before adding? would i just cycle a new tank as any new tank? the pricing sounds great but is it safe and ready for fish? btw, why would pools need/want sand, i don't get it

Most of the Tangs that U want, do best in a sand substrate.
how big is your tank?
They make a BLACK AND a WHITE Tahitian moon sand that I really like.. I have 4 tanks with the black in it. great for fry as they can eat the food as it falls on it.. IN gravel, they can't do that..
On the pool filter sand, NOT really sand, but tini gravel like. they use it in pool filters as it trapes tini particals in your pool and holds it.. Great for tanks thou. U only need to rinse it really good and place it in the tank.. U do not want more than 1" in your tank.. This helps U when U vac so U dont' take out to much water..
IF I had to redo a tank, I would go with more SAND and not really the Pool filter fine gravel.. With Tangs U need SAND and it does come in different colors.. Price is what U can afford and how big your tank is..
IN a 55gal, 2 - 20# bags is fine.. AT 26.99 here per bag, some lower depending on what U get, U can just pick one up on payday until U have enough. U need to rise it thou, in a bucket until it runs clear. a lot will float and U want that out..
